are you sure the root is low self esteem and not that you've fallen for, emotionally attached to, or really attracted to your sex buddy? From what you wrote that seems to be the root more than the low self esteem. If that's the case you either need to communicate to him about how you feel or break it off. it's that simple.

If you really think it's low self esteem then maybe you need to get out there. Get outside your comfort zone and meet some new people, friends, and maybe even date some other guys/girls. Get some excersise which always helps the body and mind to feel good and get involved in new activities. The more you are engaged with outside things the better and more important you will feel which will help to raise your self esteem.
References :
Do things for yourself. Play sports, go shopping, concentrate on some hobby you have. Get a haircut, new clothes. Go to parties. Flirt with other guys and girls. Do things for yourself. Don't fixate all your attention on this guy, who obviously doesn't want to give you all of his. Also if it really bothers you, and you want to make him your bf, talk to him and if it doesn't work out, don't stay in a toxic "frienship" and find someone else
References :
How are you so sure it's low self-esteem? You could just be having control issues...but then again, maybe that stems from low self-esteem. Idk.
